![]() ![]() It's easy to see that GPH does not tell the whole story on this kind of pump. Then go back to the 1100 GPH pumps and add a third unit for 3300 GPH. #2: Replace a pair of 1100 GPH pumps with a pair of 4500 GPH mp40's and wonder why the flow seems worse than the two "much smaller" pumps. When you turn it on you will be shocked at the amount of detritus that the mp40 allowed to settle. Replace it with a 6105 in the same spot, position it with the same flow trajectory. The reality is that water moving below a certain rate doesn't carry enough force to lift detritus or do the other jobs well that flow is expected to do in a reef. ![]() What you can't describe in GPH is the amount of work** that flow of water is capable of doing. That's what GPH means, of course - gallons (*volume) per hour (time). Of measuring volume of flow in a give time. GPH is totally an accurate way of measuring. (They actually have a few different models in that price range.) I like either of those options, as well as the non-controllable Tunze 6020. Roger: Cue the video on "flow vs turbulence" for them to further explain as well as illustrate the issue: Force is measured in distance units per time.such as centimeters or feet per second. Force is the useful aspect that actually does the things we want flow to do like move detritus and to enable our corals to breathe. Try replacing an mp40 with a 6105 some time on a mature tank - it's crazy how much detritus the mp40 is incapable of lifting into the water. However, an mp40 is just about useless outside of the 24" of space is can flow.very weak flow to maybe 36".īy comparison, a 6105 can be used in any tank up to six feet long and will generate good flow across the whole tank. The mp40 is $380 for supposedly 4,500 GPH.Įither is about $0.08 per GPH so you might be tempted to think they are comparable. Look at an MP40 vs a Tunze 6105 for an easy comparison. Most propeller pumps on this thread end up consuming a lot of their own flow, so the effect on the tank is diminished from what the GPH number would lead you to believe. The only other thing I can add is a reminder about how GPH doesn't mean a lot for a propeller 's used on regular pumps that are designed to move water through pipes. How can I disagree with a statement like that! □ Granted, I understand $250 maybe a lot for a wave maker This wavemaker will certainly be able to get the job done.Best WaveMaker on the market for the price. I recently did a complete remake of the aquascaping in the tank and I remove all my substrate from bottom including all 30gal crushed corals and sand to make it a barebottom tank in anticipation of having to move a lot of water with to benefit the corals. Once I start introducing corals and they're growing to a certain size then I'll certainly need all the movement I can possibly handle. I have 2 and I'm contemplating if I really need to put both of them in the tank right now that it's a fish only tank. Overall if they would make the impeller guard much smarter like some of the higher price units it would be a 5* wavemaker. The night mode seems to work very well by reducing power down to 30%. it shuts off for 10 minutes so you don't blow away all the food into the return and it kicks right back on without any problem. The various modes seem to work very well. I have it mounted about 8 inches from the surface of the water pointed 30 degrees towards the surface This is a 300-gallon tank and its moving water across the entire tank. it moves a lot of water and I'll say it again, it moves a lot of water. On the positive side this wave maker does more than what you would expect from a wave maker in this price range. The spacing is very wide and I've lost my fair share of livestock with powerhead having this much spacing in the guards. 4 stars cause I wish I could set the upper limit of power on mode 4.įirst off I'm giving this a 4 * + -1 * because of the size of the spacing in the impeller guard. I was looking at more Ecotech's and the like but just couldn't justify $300+. Overall, for the price this is exactly what I wanted. In my tank, this was just a crazy amount of flow and stirred everything up. So if you want variable flow, its max-min and anything in-between with no speed control adjustment to set the max speed. Have mine set so it won't overflow the top, but still has a nice back and forth action.Ĭons: modes 3 and 4 do not use the speed control. Can controller the pulse and strength of the wave. I purchased to up my flow for SPS corals and the 2 I got are more than sufficient.Ģ. These things move some water! Enough to sufficiently stir up all my sand in a 105g tank. I got these to compliment my 1 mp40 that is set to 60% on reefcrest (yellow) mode.
